What You Can Expect
The temple of Poseidon.
From far away, the temple of Poseidon stands, proud remnant of the glory of the 5th century BC. Reported since Homer’s -Odysseia- the end of Sounion peninsula became a place of worship of Poseidon and Athena with temples from the 6th century BC. During the early 5th century BC, the Athenians raised the imposing temple in honor of the Poseidon, in the fortress that protected the coast of Attica; its ruins have survived until nowadays. Lower, northern of the temple of Poseidon the sanctuary of Athena was also built. The decline during the Peloponnesian war, which was intensified during the first century B.C. led to the fall of the sanctuary during the later years, when travelers, including the philhellene English poet Lord Byron visited the place, enchanted by its location, just before the start of the excavations and the discovery of its ruins.
It looks gleaming white when viewed from the sea, which gave great comfort to sailors in ancient times: they knew they were nearly home when they saw the first glimpse of white, far off in the distance. The views from the temple are equally impressive: on a clear day you can see Kea, Kythnos and Serifos to the southeast, and Aegina and the Peloponnese to the west. The site also contains scant remains of a propylaeum , a fortified tower and, to the northeast, a 6th-century temple to Athena .
There are a couple of tavernas just below the site – perfect for lunch
